Xylitol and Chewing Gum
01/26/2009 - By Admin What we found was that a handful of small, premium chewing gum manufacturers have begun to use an all natural, sugar free sweetener called Xylitol. Xylitol is pronounced Zy-Li-Tol and comes from birch trees and corn cobs. Xylitol occurs naturally in many of the fruits and vegetables that we already eat and has been used for hundreds of years as an alternative sweetener.
We dont see Xylitol as the main sweetener in most chewing gum because it is very expensive. However, Xylitol is starting to gain attention because it is proven to help prevent cavities, its as sweet as sugar, and it is safe for diabetics. Xylitol chewing gum helps inhibit bacteria growth within the mouth. Studies show that Xylitol chewing gum can actually help to reverse and prevent cavities if 6 or more grams of Xylitol gum are chewed per day.
Most of the gum with Xylitol we found in stores were littered with all sorts of artificial sweeteners and contained very little Xylitol. To be effective at 6 grams per day, Xylitol chewing gum really has to be sweetened exclusively with Xylitol in order to be effective. That is if you dont want to chew hundreds of pieces of gum per day! Knowing how expensive Xylitol is, we did not think we would locate a 100% Xylitol gum.
Most chewing gum that people consume these days is Sugar Free. However, without using sugar, most major chewing gum companies resort to using artificial sweeteners like Aspartame and Sucralose. These ingredients are very sweet and quite
