Sunday Herald, The - MEDIA WATCH
11/29/2008 - By Admin FRIDAY saw the launch of Business 7, the new weekly for thrusting young executive types whose appetite for Scottish business news is not satiated by what appears in the dailies.
MediaWatch refrained from getting down on its hands and knees and wolf-whistling at the distribution girls in pinstripes and bowlers, looking like they felt thoroughly ridiculous, and scuttled off to whizz through issue one.
The verdict? A pleasant surprise. Crisply designed, with a fair amount of stuff you wouldn't get elsewhere. Highlights included an interview with Arnold Clark boss Eddie Hawthorne - whose company rarely says anything in print. One could say it's easier to procure such things when Arnold is one of owner Trinity Mirror's biggest advertising clients, but let's not be churlish.

This ain't easy given Trinity has only paid for about two hacks, but if it wants to break much news on that shiny accompanying website, it might want to think again.
THAT jangling sound late last week was not Trinity's business belles (geddit? ) handing out free newspapers, but rather the nerves of staff at SMG waiting to see where the redundancy axe will fall. Some insiders expect a stampede as the company offered a generous four weeks' wages for every year of service, capped at 52 weeks, in a bid to lop GBP1.5 million off the wage bill.
Some say no department will bear the brunt. Others say Grampian should brace itself.
STV's GBP6m news bill must look like low-hanging fruit to SMG boss Rob Woodward. Will he resist the temptation to move to one Scottish news service?
STAYING with SMG, we note there has still been no word on the future of Alan Clements, pictured, whose poaching from producer IWC has been interminably delayed by legal wrangles. So far, SMG has dodged most of the flak over hiring someone in the middle of an earn- out, but rumour has it that its legal department was never consulted over the move.
With Clements hired to be head of content, this hardly sounds like best practice for such a highprofile appointment.
OVER at Emap radio, the quarterly Rajar audience figures at month- end will be anticipated with trepidation following recent poor results in the Scottish central belt.
Sources say Clyde and Forth are heading for another pounding in the reach and listening hours stakes. Real Radio seems set to be chestthumping once again.
ATPR agency Stripe, there have been two senior appointments. Emma Miller, formerly of Colman Getty Scotland, arrives as associate director; while Nina Deakin comes from Weber Shandwick to be an account director. Leopards might not change their spots, but stripes are clearly more flexible!
